Do you recognize this Gown?
Mina's Red Bustle Dress from Dracula
Most of you reading this post will probably immediately recognize it. It is an Iconic Gown, both in design and in regards to the movie. This is a "Costume" Gown - Made for "Bram Stoker's Dracula" in 1992. Produced and Directed by Francis Ford Coppola based on the novel "Dracula" by Bram Stoker. Starring Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, Anthony Hopkins, and Keanu Reeves. This film won three Academy Awards, and you guessed it, one of them was for "Best Costume Design" by Eiko Ishioka"; well as for "Best Sound Effects", and "Best Make-up", plus it was nominated for "Best Art Direction/Set Decoration". In addition, it also won four Saturn Awards, with "Best Director" for Coppola, and "Best Actor" for Oldman.
A static photo of this gown does not do it justice. You truly need to see it moving to appreciate how beautiful it is in it's entirety. And this thought leads me to the basis of this post. There are often times "Costume Gowns" being thought of as "Vintage Gowns" on the Internet. Modern Day sewing techniques have become so good, it is almost impossible to tell the "vintage" from the "reproduction". So, while you are gazing at a gown of beauty on-line, check to see if there is any documentation as to whither it is truly a documented vintage gown, or perhaps just a really well-made costume and/or reproduction. Enjoy!
